Service is a foundational element of learning at ISB. It is an essential part of being a caring, responsible member of the community. The concept of action, which is learning by doing and experiencing, is a fundamental part our programme. Through service learning, students develop and apply academic knowledge, personal skills, and social skills in real-life situations involving decision-making. Service-learning opportunities help students become well-rounded, internationally-minded individuals. The Service as Action program is an opportunity for students to take their learning beyond the classroom and apply it to real-world situations.
In the MYP community project, action involves a participation in service learning (service as action). As students evolve through the service learning process, they may engage in one or more types of action. Students develop a proposal for action to serve a need in the community.
Direct service:
Students have interactions that involve people, the environment, or animals. Examples include one-on-one tutoring, developing a school garden, or working with a local shelter teaching dogs behaviours to prepare them for adoption.
Indirect service:
Though students do not see the recipients during indirect service, they have verified that their actions will benefit the community or environment. Examples include redesigning an organization’s website, writing original picture books to teach a language, or tried to reduce litter in public spaces
Advocacy:
Students speak on behalf of a cause or concern to promote action on an issue of public interest. Examples include initiating an awareness campaign on hunger in the community, performing a play on replacing bullying with respect, or creating an Amnesty International student group.
Research:
Students collect information from varied sources, analyse data, and report on a topic of importance to influence policy or practice. Examples include conducting environmental surveys to influence their school in offering healthy choices in the cafeteria, or contributing to a study of animal migration patterns.
