The Academy of Scientific Research, also known as ASR, is one of the three main academies at IS 187. As the name suggests, we focus heavily on science and technology. Classes taught by ASR teachers will, without a doubt, be some of the most fun and interactive ones that you will ever experience, and our trips will definitely make memories you will hold on to forever. Are you interested in becoming part of the ASR family? Come and check out what we have to offer!

Once a semester a prompt is given to research a certain topic (ex: an interesting animal species) with a partner of the student’s choice.
After students have researched their chosen topic, they are asked to create a professional presentation with pictures and diagrams helping to further explain their topic.
Projects are presented to the class and graded based on the quality of the presentation itself and the performance of the presenter.

Do you play an instrument, or have a love for music? If you answered "yes", then the ASR Band Class is definitely the class for you! Each grade has its own band class, and incoming sixth graders must audition with out highly esteemed band director, Mr. Altieri. Our band offers the following instruments: the trumpet, flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trombone, baritone horn, bass guitar, electric guitar, and drum set. Below are some of the performances from our band classes over the years.

Traditionally, all grades will perform in the spring concert, while only the seventh and eighth graders will perform in the winter concert. Sadly, there will be no winter concert this year, for obvious reasons. However, our band classes and band director look forward to the possibility of performing in a spring concert later this year!
The sixth and seventh graders of ASR went to Philly for what was many students' first overnight trip! Along their travels, the students visited Adventure Aquarium, Lincoln Financial Football Field, the National Constitution Center, the Eastern State Penitentiary and the Franklin Institute Science Museum, just to name a few.

During the winter season, the ASR students got to watch the famed show performed at Medieval Times! It was a very fun experience, in which the students were all able to get to know each other better.

The sixth and seventh graders of ASR got to visit indoor amusement park, iPlay America, in neighboring state New Jersey. The students rode the rollercoasters, crashed into each other on the bumper cars, and sped around the race track on the Go-Karts. And, of course, how could I forget the insanely competitive game of laser tag?
The sixth graders, under the supervision of our lovely Social Studies teacher Ms. Regan, were lucky enough to spend their afternoon eating lunch at Spartan Souvlaki - a Greek restaurant located at 6824 8th Avenue, in Brooklyn. It was many of the students first times trying Greek food, and an experience they will never forget!
During the fall of their semester, students from ASR visited the West Point Military Academy. Throughout their tour of the academy, the students saw the chapel, the stadium at which the military students played competitive football, as well as the academy's famous museum.

The sixth graders of ASR visited the National Geographic Ocean Odyssey, an exhibit located in Times Square, New York. Unlike your typical aquarium, this exhibit does not display real marine life. Instead, it features insanely realistic 3D projections of the different species of the ocean. The students also participated in many fun and engaging marine-related activities.
GREAT MEMORIES!
The most notable trip that the students of ASR partake in is their senior trip to Disney, in Orlando, Florida! The students look forward to this trip throughout their entire stay at I.S. 187. Students who participate in this weeklong trip experience the funs of the theme parks, as well as other educational exhibits. Overall, the ASR senior trip to Disney is a relaxing escape from a traditional week of school, and a great way to bond with classmates.

This carousel shows the decorations of 702's homeroom during the 2019 light fight!
The Light Fight is an annual event around Christmas time, where the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in ASR compete to decorate their homerooms! This event promotes teamwork between peers, and is a fun way to start Christmas break!
