Core Courses are the classes that you HAVE to take in order to graduate. These courses are designed to give you an overview of world history, United States history, United States government, and economics.
Grade 9: Global History and Geography I
Grade 9 begins with the Paleolithic Era and continues through to the Age of Absolutism and the Enlightenment. The course emphasizes the key themes of interactions over time, shifts in political power, and the role of belief systems, as well as the social studies practices of historical and spatial thinking.
Grade 10: Global History and Geography II
Global 10 provides a snapshot of the world circa 1750, and continues chronologically up to the present. Several concepts are woven throughout the course including industrialization, nationalism, imperialism, conflict, technology, and the interconnectedness of the world. This is a NYS Regents course, and students are required to take and pass the Global History & Geography II Regents exam in June as part of the NYS graduation requirements.
Grade 11: United States History and Government
US History 11 begins with the colonial and constitutional foundations of the United States, and continues to explore the events and transformaton of United States through to present day. This is a NYS Regents course, and students are required to take and pass the US History and Government Regents exam in June as part of the NYS graduation requirements.
Grade 12: Participation in Government and Civics
This course aims to provide students with opportunities to become engaged in the political process. The curriculum allows for flexibility in order to encourage students to engage with current events in learning key ideas and an understanding of United States government. This is a half year course.
Grade 12:“Economics, the Enterprise System, and Finance”
This course examines the principles of the United States free market economy in a global context, as well as individual responsibility for managing personal finances. This is a half year course, and also meets the NYS Financial Literacy standards.
