8th Grade

Welcome to 8th grade at Indian River Middle School!

Students in 8th grade take a variety of different courses throughout the school year. Some classes meet every day all year, while some meet every day for half of the year, or even for a quarter of the year. Musical Ensembles such as Chorus, Orchestra and Band as well as Physical Education meet every other day for the entire school year. Below are a list of all the different courses offered in 8th grade!

Core Courses
English 8 -or- English 8 Honors*
Social Studies 8
Math 8  -or- Algebra*
Science 8 -or- Life Science: Biology w/Lab*
*Based on 7th Grade teacher recommendation; must maintain at least at 85%*
*Algebra and Biology both culminate in a June NYS Regents Examination.

World Language:
French, German, Latin, or Spanish
*Transfer students who enter past the first 5 weeks of school will only be placed in a World Language if they were previously enrolled in one at their last school district.
Students who pass both the course and the final proficiency exam will earn 1.0 high school credit of World Language.

Band, Orchestra, and Chorus students are additionally required to attend instrumental lessons which follow a 1/6 day cycle rotation. Students are responsible for the classwork they miss during lessons and should plan ahead!
