In the 2022-2023 school year, we implemented the New York Next Generation Learning Standards in grades 3-8. Indian River uses the math modules written by Eureka Math in 2014. Through the use of our math coaches, teachers have been provided professional development and support to ensure understanding of the methods and strategies used within the modules. The Math Curriculum Council examined the crosswalks provided by NYSED to explore what next steps may be needed to ensure our students learn the standards expected by NYS and will support the curriculum work throughout the summer and school year. The Math Snapshot provides insight into the key learning and standards that are at each grade level.
It is essential that at the elementary and middle level students work on Fluency, Application Problems, and are guided through the Concept Development. The problem set is used as independent/guided practice and the exit ticket is a quick way to assess student learning. The minutes are broken down within each module to help guide the teacher. Modules are printed through our local BOCES and have been adjusted over the years in response to teacher feedback. Classes at the K-5 level should have 60 minutes of math in their schedule, while grades 6-8 have one period a day.
Recently, the District was able to purchase Eureka Math2 for grades K-5, which is an updated version of the Modules. It includes print and digital materials as well as incorporates math manipulatives in order to best support instruction. In addition, supports for students learning the English language as well as varying academic needs were taken into consideration with the development of this textbook. Helpful tips and communication tools for parents and teachers are also included.

Students in Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 use eMath Instruction as a guide. It follows the NYS Math standards. Pre-Algebra focuses on key concepts needed to be successful in Algebra. Other math courses that we offer are Business Math, Pre-calculus and Calculus (SUNY Canton). We also offer Math 150 and Statistics through JCC EDGE program.. Students must receive 3 credits in mathematics in order to graduate and must pass a minimum of one regents exam (typically Algebra). Advanced Regents diploma requires two additional Regents exams. Computer Programming is currently offered through the math department and students are able to learn both the Java and Python programming languages.
