Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process by which students acquire and apply a range of social, emotional, behavioral skills, attitudes, and values. These skills help students make informed decisions, manage their emotions, and navigate interactions effectively, thereby enhancing their academic success. Our SEL curriculum uses CASEL 5 competencies, which is evidence-based to support all students’ learning and development.
*REMINDER: SEL is not a proper replacement for mental health support.
Please refer to resources at the end of our webpage if needed!
Our new focus is on CASEL 5, which is an evidence-based SEL framework. CASEL 5 focuses on five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills.
Application of Competencies:
Self-Awareness: Students will identify how emotions influence their thoughts and actions
Self-Management: Students will develop strategies for stress management, impulse control, and goal-setting
Social Awareness: Students will be attuned to the emotions and needs of those around them to build positive and inclusive relationships. This also fosters a sense of community, interconnectedness, and contributes to a more supportive environment.
Responsible-Decision Making: Students will weigh the consequences of their actions, exhibit sound judgment, and act in alignment with their values.
Relationship Skills: Students will develop relationship skills, including effective communication, active listening, and collaboration.
By discussing these themes, students gain insights into achieving academic success, engaging with their school and community, maintaining health and wellness, and pursuing fulfilling careers.
Students in SEL support will learn by actively applying CASEL 5 through discussions, activities, and peer interactions.
