Private Lessons

Private lessons are an important component of our music program and allow students individual time with one of our professional adjunct music faculty to ask questions about technique, upcoming performance exams, and sometimes to simply make music one-on-one with a professional in the field. Here you will find a link to an excellent article on the importance of private lessons but I would also like to highlight here some of the more important points:

  • Private lessons help to minimize frustration. I believe the less frustration the better when it comes to learning; who doesn’t? Though frustration can create determination in some people, it can discourage others. It’s sad to see a child give up learning an instrument in the early stages when all was needed was a little personal attention. Every child deserves the opportunity to enjoy and not be frustrated with making music.
  • Private lessons set up the child for success. With a private instructor, a child learns more quickly the fundamentals of playing. A solid foundation is built, and the child can keep learning, playing and succeeding. Succeeding is fun! The young musician builds confidence, and doesn’t give up. Furthermore, once the student is strong in instrumental skills, he/she can perhaps focus more on learning ensemble skills and gleaning knowledge from the band director. (or orchestra director ;)
  • Private lessons are for anyone, not just music-career bound musicians. A private instructor can maximize a young musician’s opportunity for musical success and fun. I look forward to working with some of your young musicians!

Private lessons are encouraged but are not mandatory for participation in the orchestra program. Private lessons are typically available after school most days, at an additional cost depending on adjunct teacher schedules, during the coronavirus pandemic most lessons are still being offered virtually. If you are interested in signing your child up for private lessons simply fill out the google form below and you will be connected with one of our faculty members.

If cost is an issue we have a private mentorship program where one of our honors high school students will work individually with another student. I highly encourage private study outside of ensemble lessons and will work with you to make it work regardless of scheduling conflicts or financial difficulties.
