Patterson Elementary has implemented the CHAMPS classroom management model across all classroom. CHAMPS is an acronym that really breaks down how a class session should go. Tot he left you can see how we broke it down for Physical Education class. It is also broken down on our daily agenda that is posted daily and is what you se to the left is posted in the gym for everyone one to see daily. If you would like to read up further on what CHAMPS is please read this ARTICLE.
To go with the CHAMPS we also have a weekly class rubric that is used. We use the word expectations as all students know what it takes to earn the max of 9 points per week. We keep a running total for each quarter and then each quarter is kept to see if classes improve from quarter to quarter. It really helps with clarification of expectations and students buy in to improve their overall scores!
For management we use a couple different plans. We use Zone of Regulation which is great as it allows students to recognize their feelings. With this comes also considering the size of the problem. Once a student really thinks it through they realize that the problem is usually small and is easily worked through. You can read more about zone of regulation HERE.
PBIS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
Patterson Elementary also uses the PBIS model to assist in supporting our students. We use a number of incentives to aide in students understanding of making positive choices and showing hard work. PBIS also allows us as a staff to focus on a positive relationship we create with our students. If you would like to read more about PBIS please click HERE.
As incentives though the PBIS models, students can receive tickets throughout their day. These tickets can be turned in for simple class rewards as well as turned in for whole school rewards. There is also a prize cart that comes around occasionally that students can use their tickets to "purchase" a prize. A student may also receive a Super Star. This is for an individual student that will receive a form explaining what they did positively and will be brought home to be celebrated! As for a class incentive we give Golden Pillars. If a class is exceptional a staff member can give them a Golden Pillar. Once a class receives a certain number of Golden Pillars then they will have a class celebration! This may be the most popular with the students.
Lastly, as a staff we can nominate a Prairie Dog of the Week. These individuals get their name said over the morning announcements and become part fun celebration to celebrate with Mrs. Hebenstreit!
As you can see we celebrate our students in a number of different ways here at Patterson. We strive to make our environment one that is inviting for all and really emphasizes the positives our students show us on a daily basis.
Restorative Justice
In our PE classes I do like to use Restorative Justice practices when needed. Simply stated, if a student acts out and makes a bad choice behaviorally, it is important to work with that student so a few things happen. First, the student takes responsibility. By doing this and working with the student they will learn from their mistake and the plan is that they won't make the same behavioral choice again because they understand the effect it had on themselves and/or others. Second, by working with the student collaboratively the student is not threated by the staff member and a positive, trusting relationship can be built. A partnership is created and a plan is made moving forward that the student is a part of. If you would like to read further on how Restorative Justice is being used in a school setting please read this ARTICLE.
