Matthew White – Orchestra Director, 5-String Violin/Violist, Music Education Innovator & Creative Catalyst
Mr. Matthew White, a native of Bourbonnais, IL, is the orchestra director at Scullen Middle School in Naperville, Illinois (District 204). A proud graduate of Illinois State University, Mr. White earned his Bachelor’s of Music Education in 2015, studying viola with Dr. Kate Lewis and conducting with Dr. Glenn Block. During his time at ISU, he served as principal violist of the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and performed as the violist in the ISU Graduate String Quartet. Seeing himself as a life-long learner, he continually looks to further his education and holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology and is completing a second Master's Degree in School Counseling at Lewis University.
At Scullen Middle School, Mr. White leads a vibrant, student-centered music program grounded in both tradition and innovation. Known for his creative and forward-thinking approach, he designs meaningful learning experiences that empower students to explore their identities as musicians and individuals through independent study, alternative styles ensembles featuring electric strings, and cross-cultural music experiences. He firmly believes that music education should spark curiosity, foster collaboration, and cultivate joy. Inspired by his friend and teaching partner, Ms. Daryl Silberman, Mr. White performs on a Realist RV5-e 5-String instrument, utilizing its expanded range for both teaching and performance.
Mr. White’s innovative contributions to music education have been recognized with several honors, including the inaugural 2018 Outstanding Emerging Educator Award from the Illinois String Teachers Association and the recent District 204 Impact Award which recognizes one staff member per year who have made a significant positive impact on students and the district. Under his direction, the Scullen Chamber Strings (newly renamed Philharmonia) have performed at the prestigious 2022 Midwest Clinic in Chicago and the 2020 Illinois Music Educators Conference in Peoria, IL. He has also shared his expertise by presenting at three National ASTA Conferences. A grant-winning educator, Matthew has secured multiple awards to support innovative programming, such as guest artist residencies and the integration of electronic stringed instruments.
Beyond the classroom, Matthew is an active violinist, violist, guest clinician, and adjudicator throughout the Chicago area and Illinois. He is passionate about exploring the dynamic intersections of music, technology, and visual art—and is always ready to share a bit of laughter through learning. Outside of his musical life, Matthew enjoys spending quality time with his family, being outside, cultivating his healthy obsession with elephants, watching sports, exploring new cultures, savoring excellent coffee, and sharing his collection of wonderfully corny jokes.
The Fun Stuff
How long have you been teaching?
I started teaching in 2015 - I started my career at Scullen and I am still here! It is the BEST place!
What instrument do you play?
The first instrument I learned how to play was the viola! In college to become a music teacher, I learned how to play all of the band and orchestra instruments. Some I play better than others ;)
What kind of music do you like to listen to?
I listen to a lot of different kinds of music - depends on the mood I am in. I obviously enjoy classical music, but I also like Electronic music/DJs, Rock, Jazz, K-Pop, Country, Pop, Hip Hop - just about everything! I love finding new music too - so bring me your recommendations!
What do you like to do for fun?
I mostly like to hang out with my family. My son is very active and likes to play video games and sports and we have two dogs that like to play and go on walks. I also like being outside (working in the garden, hiking), playing video games (Zelda and VR Golf are my go to games), reading and learning new things.
