The 8th-grade orchestra at Scullen Middle School is designed to be a capstone experience that prepares students for the next stage of their musical journey: joining the GRAMMY Award-winning high school music programs in District 204 at Neuqua Valley or Waubonsie Valley High Schools. By this stage, students have developed strong technical skills and musical understanding, allowing them to tackle more advanced and nuanced repertoire.
In 8th grade, the focus is on polishing these skills to a high level of proficiency. Students engage with complex and challenging pieces that demand a deeper sense of musicality, ensemble cohesion, and personal expression. They also take on leadership roles within the orchestra, guiding younger students and contributing to the overall success of the ensemble.
Throughout the year, students will perform in three concerts, demonstrating their advanced abilities and the culmination of their middle school orchestra experience. These performances not only showcase their growth but also serve as a platform to prepare them for the rigorous expectations of high school music programs.
