Reading Improvement is a pull out program in which students participates in a small reading intervention group with a reading specialist. This reading group is in addition to the time your child spends reading with their classroom teacher. Please know that there is no new instruction occurring in the regular classrooms while students are participating in Reading Improvement groups. During this group time for 1st-5th graders, we generally use a program called Leveled Literacy Intervention, which focuses on building reading comprehension through books at each student’s instructional level (the level they are able to read with support and guidance) and practices phonics skills. In the beginning of the school year with our Kindergarten students we use Jolly Phonics to learn letter sounds and identification and practice their sight words. We transition into using Leveled Literacy Intervention with the Kindergarten students as their literacy skills grow.
Our groups are flexible throughout the school year. This means that students are joining and exiting our groups as needed. Please contact me if you have any questions about what we are working on during our small group reading.
