5th graders from Ms. Shirk's class are sharing examples of how we practice kilo to build on our understanding of the world around us and brainstorm possible solutions to real world problems. We also reflect on our observations as a means of strengthening our connection to Nā Hopena A‘o.
Cultivating Connections; Strengthening Hā
Mrs. Ino's haumana practice kilo regularly to build our relations with the aina and with each other. Through kilo, we strengthen our Hā as we use our five senses to gain new knowledge and make real world connections. We reflect on our findings to affirm our understanding.
IPES STEM Night 2024: Join us in the Orchard!
On April 26, 2024 our school community was invited to campus to participate in a variety of STEM related stations. Grade 5 welcomed parents, students, IPES alumni, and community members to visit our orchard, practice kilo and provide input on naming this space. We had over 100 guest to our orchard during this event.
With an Aina-based social justice lens, sixth graders meet two plant kin - Tii/Kii and 'Uala. Learners met Tii and have learned:
To malama through watering,
Practice protocol for harvesting,
Lei making, and
Worked with them for a Science unit to learn about scale.
In working with 'Uala, learners did a kilo of three 'Uala types. Then, they did another kilo months later. The hope is that these can be propagated and used as living mulch on campus and in the orchard.
