Before the arrival of the Españoles the region was habitated by several indigenous groups. 

After Mexico won his independence in 1821 ,Sinaloa was originally joined with Sonora as the Western state .They separated in 1830 and the actual Sinaloa became its own state in Culiacan tierra caliente eventually becoming for the capital
