Workshop on Art in 'Public Places'

by Anpu Varkey

The Department of Multi-Media and Mass Communication organized a very enlightening online workshop on “Art In Public Places” on February 5, 2022. The guest speaker for the session was Ms. Anpu Varkey who is a Bengaluru-based artist originally hailing from Pala. She finished her education at schools in Baroda, London, and Germany. She has worked on a graphic book named Summer’s Children based on her childhood memories in Pala.

Her first major work for the city she grew up in was a gigantic harvest moon, an image everyone could easily connect to. The image of the gigantic Mahatma Gandhi on the towering Delhi Police Headquarters building at ITO - was also done by artist Anpu Varkey.

The session on “Art in Public Places” was taken by Ms. Anpu Varkey which started with her experience and journey of street art, painting murals and street paintings which was like a tradition for her. She stated that bodily movements have an essential role to play when it comes to street art and it gave her immense joy when people would come and watch her work, sometimes, they would even watch the entire process and wait for her to complete it. She stated that every spectator had a different perception of her art and that she was just a mediator between the spectators and the art. The entire session was really interesting and easily understandable because of many intriguing stories and personal interactions with the audience.
