Universal social, emotional, and behavioral screening is increasingly being recognized as a foundational component of a comprehensive, multi-tiered system of school-based supports (MTSS). As schools strive to develop a systematic approach to meeting the SEBH needs of all students, often with limited resources and competing priorities, there is a need for responsive, efficient, and effective systems and data to improve outcomes. Universal SEBH screening is one component of a comprehensive approach and is increasingly being adopted by schools and districts across the country.
The screening process is used as one data source amongst a convergence of multiple data sources to identify students who may present with a potential need for enhanced support in the areas of social, academic, or emotional behavior. In hearing directly from students how they are feeling, educators may determine what type of support is most appropriate. Enhancing universal SEBH support will promote skill and competence growth for all students. A need for targeted or intensive supports may be identified when utilizing a variety of data sources.
