As Iowa schools prepare to return to learn, the issue of Health and Safety in Education raises many questions and emotions. The health and safety of students and staff is the Department of Education’s and Iowa schools’ highest priority.

While one healthy practice might get a lot of attention, it is crucial to build a safe and healthy environment using multiple strategies. Not only are layered strategies more effective, it isn’t always possible or practical to apply a single strategy to all situations and environments.

• School communities are also aware it is crucial to build a safe and healthy environment considering: family needs, student needs, staff needs, community data driven decisions and the use of multiple strategies.

• Schools understand the importance of supporting families and the unique, individualized student needs in the use of health and safety strategies.

• One health and safety strategy layered with another strategy works together to increase health and wellness. This is especially true when our nation is in the process of learning about a new communicable disease.

• Changes and updates to best practices will be included in these supports when they occur.
