The Iowa State Penitentiary is located in Fort Madison and is a historic riverfront community that has hosted its Maximum Security prison since 1839. Located in Lee county Iowa, the Prison is surrounded by recreational opportunities both on and off the river.

There are approximately 435 staff that work at the Facility in careers that encompass security, medical and a variety of other fields.

The prison was recently built and opened in 2015. Its modern design creates a safe environment to work and fulfill the mission of the Department of Corrections. The Facility has the capacity of housing 770 incarcerated individuals.
