One of the main reasons her children started this memorial fund was to continue the work that Sandy was passionate about while she was alive. While she was passionate about many things, she was particularly passionate about her faith community, social economic injustice among food service workers, and those with food insecurity.
Therefore, the family decided that at least 20% of the funds raised (with a goal of $4500) would be divided equally among three organizations: Birmingham Friends Meeting, Bread for the World and Broad Street Ministries (Philadelphia).
As of 1 May, the family has designated over $1000 to be distributed to these three organizations.
Sandy was an avid gardener, and that love was shared by her husband, Doug, and her children, Tom, Beth, and Laura. Many days as a young family were spent tending, harvesting, and enjoying the produce from the garden. Sandy and Doug were in the midst of building raised beds in their yard.
Doug and Sandy decided to build raised beds to minimize how much of the garden the bunnies eat and to allow Sandy to continue gardening with less strain on her back and knees. The plan was to build four raised beds arranged in a traditional German Four Square Garden, along with rebuilding the three-bin compost system and building a new outside storage shed.
As of 1 May, the first raised bed has been completed. Snow peas, lettuces, mustard greens, pac choi, radishes and carrots have been planted. And hoops and deer netting have been installed to keep the deer from eating the garden empty.
Doug wants to finish the garden in her memory.
