Pedestrian Experience

Challenges and Opportunities

Much of Thames Street is narrow. Where there are wider shoulders, on-street parking is allowed however parked cars also take up part of the travel lanes. Sidewalk conditions vary along the corridor. Some stretches of Thames Street do not have continuous sidewalks. Generally, sidewalks are 5 to 5.5 feet wide, but within this space they accommodate street lamps, utility poles and boxes, trash cans, and sometimes overgrown vegetation. This becomes a challenge as it compromises the necessary clearance for ADA accessibility.
