Weekly diary in Poland

Week 1

My first week in Poland has been very nice, when I arrived in Siedlce I met my host sister Lena and my host mother Ana and, together, we went home. When we arrived, I met my host father Sebas and Lena showed me the house I will live in for six weeks.

This first week I have discovered a lot of things and curiosities about Poland. And all of them have surprised me. For example, the lessons and the timetable in my Polish school are so different than in my Spanish school (at least for me) because here, the students have a break after each lesson and classes last 45 minutes (15 minutes less than in Spain).

Another thing that has shocked me is the meal times. Here, although there isn’t a specific time for the different meals, usually lunch is at 11 - 12 a.m. and dinner is at 5 - 6 p.m.

Finally, I want to stress that it’s true that in Poland the people are so polite because when you are walking through the school they normally smile at you but they don’t come to talk with you. I have to say that, in Spain I think we are more open to meeting new people and starting conversations with them.

week 2

This week started really boring because, sometimes, is difficult to stay in a class where you don’t understand anything, including what the teacher says, and it can be a little bit stressful and not funny. Because of this I think the days can be very routine, but I hope that it doesn’t happen a lot.

Leaving this topic, I want to say that, this week, I have done my first Italian exam and I have learned new things in polish. Also I tried new food and I met new people.

For me, the best thing in the week was the weekend: on Friday I was visiting Warsaw (the capital of Poland) and it was incredible. I was in the “old town” and I loved how it looked because all the buildings reminded me of a classic style and I was very impressed. After the tour, my host family and I were having dinner in a Thai restaurant: to be honest, I hadn’t tried the Thai food but I have to confess that it was delicious.

Finally, on Sunday it was quiet. I spent the day studying and doing homeworks until 7pm because, at this hour, I was watching a choir group in the theater with my host mom and some of her friends. It was nice.

week 3

Third week I lived new and different experiences. For example I learned how to make a homemade tortilla. It was really nice because I had to do a video call with my family so they could teach me how to cook the tortilla. And I have to say that it was delicious. Also I went to the cinema with Lena and her friends to watch the new film called: anyone but you. We were watching the movie in english with polish subtitles and I understood the context, but sometimes it was a little bit difficult to understand what the characters were saying.

Furthermore, this week was shorter than the others because on Thursday evening, we started our trip to Gdansk, an important city situated in the north of Poland, on the Baltic sea. We spent three days and three nights there in a friends’ house and it was incredible.

The first night I was playing a table game with my hot mom and the family who was hosting us. It was really funny. The first day, on Friday morning I was visiting the old town and I was really impressed. It was a very beautiful landscape. In the afternoon Lena, her friend and I decided to go to the beach to watch the sunset and it was magical but I think I still prefer the Spanish beaches. On Saturday we decided to go to the European Solidarity center to know more about the shipyard, the strikes, the solidarity and communism in Poland. I found it very interesting. On Sunday, the last day, we thought it would be a good idea to go up to the top of the cathedral. And the views were incredible but I didn’t like the part about having to go up 409 stairs. It was so tiering.

week 4

In my opinion, this week was the most normal and quiet week. I was going to school and trying to pay attention and understand something. The weekend was also quiet but I was celebrating the birthdays of one of my neighbors and Lena's little cousin. My host mom teaches me how to make pierogi, one of the most popular and known Polish foods. The preparation was funny and I expected it to be more difficult than it actually is.

week 5

Honestly, the weeks are passing so quickly for me, this week for example. I didn’t do anything special but the time passed fast. The only thing that I did was to meet with Zuzia, one of my friends here, to go for a walk and take some coffee after school. Ah, and this week I was more focused on studying my subjects from Spain because when I come back I will do some exams. The plan for the weekend was to relax at home. On Saturday I was making my first cheesecake (and it was delicious) and, at night, we were preparing homemade pizzas to eat all together, with the uncles and the cousin. Finally, on Sunday, I spent time watching some films with my family.
