Blind Man Driving

In this project, we got to look at Blind Man Driving and other songs by Joey Stuckey. We then got to meet Joey and listen to him when he played Blind Man Driving for our class. We were then given unedited recordings of his song and adjusted them with Panning, volume and other effects on the recordings. We also were able to add our own sound effects to add on to the theme of the song.

From this assignment, I was able to learn a lot about Joey Stuckey and his experiences growing up and being blind in the music industry.  I also learned how to pan one audio track side to side. I did this with my siren sound effect to replicate a police car.

Dilla Syle

What We Did:

In this project we created songs in the style of Jay Dilla. We first listened to songs from multiple native tongue groups and other artists who implemented sampling into their songs. We then used ableton and the samples provided by ableton to create our song. We were able to adjust the pitch and other aspects of the samples to make it our own. We also added some fun movie quotes into the song. I personally used the movie clips from the movie Anchorman to introduce and close my song. We also created our own baselines using a bass instrument and notes on the push.

What We Learned:

In this project, I learned how to use samples in my song and adjust them to fit our own song. Leading up to the project, I learned a lot about sampling in the music industry and incidences of copyright issues through sampling which happened to some groups like De La Soul. I also learned how to create my own bass lines through the ableton push and how to use the quantize tool to correct any human timing errors.

Doctor Who Theme

In this assignment, we first watched one episode to get a feel for what the song means and how it relates to the show. We then downloaded the Midi file of the bass, melody, and Tardis sounds of the songs. From there we experimented with different sounds, volumes, pitches, and panning to make the song our own.

From this assignment, I learned how to upload tracks into ableton. I also learned how to adjust individual tracks on ableton and change their pitch and speed to make the song have a different feel. I also learned how to download certain sounds online.

Fix the Mix

Reflection: In my fix the mix project, I first fixed the instruments assigned by my teacher. These were the fuzzy bass, electric piano, and the synth chords. I fixed these by changing the instrument, this greatly improved the sound of my song. I then noticed that both of the guitar chords were making my song worse. I also adjusted the notes of the synth chords and electric piano so that they fit better. I then added drums to parts of the song with mellow energy. Finally, I added sound effects that would make my song have a snowy video game effect.

From this project, I learned how to make many small and major adjustments to improve the quality of the song. I also learned to overcome challenges that I faced through the production of the song. Also, I learned how to adjust the notes in the song and I learned to add music from outside sources into bandlab.

Mixing Music on Stage

Reflection: Before I started the assignment, I decided that I wanted to make it seem like a band and use only instruments. My original idea for the project was to use guitar, bass, piano, and drums but I was unsure what to use for the 5th instrument. After hearing the organ in Micheal Jackson's thriller it inspired me to use an organ. For panning and graphic EQ I wanted the guitar to be the most present and made it so that you could still clearly hear everything else.

In this assignment, I learned ways to be influenced by other songs to make my own song. I also learned new functions in Bandlab. I learned how to use the graphic EQ function and improved how I use the pan dial.
