Turn off the sound before your child starts to read the stories below. Look at the pictures together and predict what the story is about. Your child can read the story several times by themselves before rereading with the sound turned on.

Our strategies for working out unknown words include:

Look at the picture.

Think what would make sense.

Look at the sounds.

Reread from the beginning of the sentence.

Read on to the end of the sentence.

Aim to read with fluency and expression, making use of punctuation to read well.

Talk about the story and ask questions or have your child ask you thoughtful questions, e.g. Why do you think ..?

Read the story again tomorrow. Aim for fabulous reading.
