Approaches popular with students

A selection of approaches in online classes that were popular with students is presented along with student comments.

Online classes in general

Flipped classroom

[Student comment] A course involved watching videos before each class in preparation, with class time being used for holding live sessions about the content of the videos. I was able to deepen my learning particularly in courses that used this style.

Inviting guest speakers from around the world

[Student comment] This term we were able to listen to talks given by guest speakers whom we could not have invited in the past because of the physical distances involved. This was very fruitful.

Live classes

Classes held live from locations that cannot be visited in large groups

[Student comment] In a course, a class was held live from a historic site. 150 students were enrolled in the course, so I do not think this could have been achieved in a class conducted the usual way. I learned a lot from it.

On-demand classes

Videos divided by topic

[Student comment] Since the videos were concise with each video lasting around 30 minutes, I was able to concentrate when studying them.

Kaltura’s quiz function

[Student comment] Kaltura quizzes were inserted at appropriate moments. This promoted students’ understanding effectively.

Live discussions

Communication using multiple tools

[Student comment] Discussions this term were more sophisticated and lively. Multiple methods for exchanging views were available such as chat and Moodle forums in addition to live discussions, so it seems that people who find it difficult to express their views verbally also expressed their opinions using tools that were suitable for them.

TA/CS

Managing chat in live classes

[Student comment] At suitable times during the class, the TA asked the instructor questions about the things that the students had asked using the chat function.

Creating a good atmosphere in live classes

[Student comment] Since students basically turned their videos and microphones off, the TA/CS helped by nodding or engaging in dialogue on behalf of the students in the professor’s classes.

Chat

Using the chat function in breakout rooms

[Student comment] When we were split into breakout rooms, the instructor listed the points for discussion using the chat function, so discussions never got off topic.
