2) Assessment(s) and Indicators
3) Reflection and Action
Purpose:
The Self-Determination Assessment and Advocacy Tool serves three interconnected purposes:
Assessment – To help communities and institutions reflect on how current practices either perpetuate or disrupt colonial harm in data and health systems.
Relational Accountability – To provide a framework for transparent, community-led evaluation rooted in Indigenous-defined non-negotiables to course correct.
Advocacy – To support Indigenous communities in defining, articulating, and advancing demands for decolonizing systems of power.
This reframes “equity” away from inclusion in colonial systems and toward self-determination as the standard. Furthermore, by challenging the notion of equity as inclusion within colonial systems, it positions self-determination as the measure of justice.
