A good script is an essential element of a good broadcasting story. While literary journalism is not my primary area of expertise, I'm always trying to write scripts that extract the full potential of the footage and make it easy for viewers to understand the story. Here are some scripts I've written in the past.
I wrote this script for a collaborative segment we did with AACS, the African American Cultural Society, in celebration of Black History Month. I usually include directions on the script so that our editors can follow them when putting together the segment.
This script was written for the segment featuring Mr. Jones, who won Teacher of the Year at BHS. It begins by introducing basic information about him, then ends by recognizing the honor he was awarded. I wrote it in a way that naturally leads to his interview. Achieving a natural transition from voiceovers to interviews is one thing I always keep in mind when writing scripts.
This script was for the commentary of soccer highlights. In contrast to the two scripts above, I made it fast-paced and exciting with short sentences and more exclamation marks. I love watching European soccer, so I applied some terms and phrases used by commentators in that field.
