Why is the First Amendment important?  


  1. First Amendment Visual: explain, model, questions, complete


  • Religion: The government cannot establish an official religion or favor one religion over another. You are also free to practice your own religion without government interference. 

  • Speech: You have the right to express your opinions without government censorship. This includes a wide range of expression, even if it is offensive, but it does not protect things like defamation (false statements of fact libel, slander.)

  • Press: The government cannot censor the media (information), ensuring journalists and others can report news and share information freely. 

  • Assembly: People have the right to gather peacefully for protests, marches, or other groups. However, the government can place restrictions on the time, place, and manner of these assemblies (e.g., not blocking an emergency room entrance). 

  • Petition: You have the right to appeal to the government to address your concerns. This includes lobbying officials and filing lawsuits (as long as they have legal basis).
