Stoplight rubrics provide a clear, visual way to communicate what kinds of AI use are permitted for an assignment. Using a simple green–yellow–red framework, instructors can articulate:
Green (Can Use): AI tools students are encouraged or allowed to use freely.
Yellow (Use With Permission): AI assistance permitted only for specific portions of the assignment or under certain conditions.
Red (Cannot Use): AI uses that are prohibited because they undermine learning goals or academic integrity.
Stoplight rubrics can be applied to entire assignments or broken down into individual components such as brainstorming, outlining, drafting, coding, or editing, giving students clear guidance on how AI can support their work. They also serve as a more detailed, transparent rubric outlining what students can and cannot do with AI, helping foster responsible, ethical, and pedagogically aligned AI use in the classroom.
