This project is part of the PhD of my supervisor Camilla Roveta and the master thesis of Carlo Vultaggio about the identification of Stylasterids.
My task was to identify the species in the samples taken from the Ross Sea in Antarctica from either on the Iselin Bank (On the right on the map) or at Cape Hallett Canyon (On the left on the map).
I had to sort the specimen based on visual inspection under the stereomicroscope whereafter I prepared some samples to analyze at the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Finally using the pictures taken at the SEM, I identified the species and wrote a species description.
The stylasteridae family consists of hydrozoans with a calcified skeleton. (Click on the boxes for more information)
It was the first time for me to see these family of Hydrozoans so it was very nice to be learning something new. The use of the SEM was a real highlight for me as I was so amazed at how much the microscope could zoom in while still maintaining such a high level of detail. I absolutely loved working with Carlo and our teamwork was very good.
