Domestication process
Little is known about the origins of the coconut palm's exact original location, however, it is widely believed that the the crop originated in the South Pacific around the Malay archipelago. It is believed to have journey to the Philippines via floating on ocean currents to the mainland.
Impact on Filipino history
Coconut farming has become a major way of life for many Filipinos today, but how did it get to this point?
In 1642 the Filipino coconut industry began to take shape with a Spanish Governors decree to start planting coconuts for food and galleon production for the Spanish navy since they had colonized them at the time.
The Philippine Coconut Authority began in 1973, this authority was made to standardize the governing process for growing coconuts in the country, the goal was to make a globally competitive coconut growing industry which they achieved since the Philippines is the worlds 2nd largest coconut exporter.
Today, 25% of total agricultural land is for coconuts in the Philippines.
