Etel Adnan, Leporellos
This week, students will explore how our culture uses symbols to communicate messages. The artist Etel Adnan and her Leporellos accordion booklets will be used as inspiration for dream journals. Students will discuss what kinds of dreams they have and how they can display them in their journals. Using oil pastels and watercolor paints, students will decorate their dream journals. Later, the journals will be used as a resource for warm-up activities throughout the lab.
During this week, students will brainstorm more about dreams, including what type of stories and imagery show up when they dream. We will also encourage a discourse about nightmares, and what stories and imagery are found in them. Students will be shown examples of Lance Letscher's and Laslo Antal's cut paper collages. Using construction paper, magazines, and drawing materials, students will create collages to portray their dreams and nightmares on each side of a piece of cardboard.
