By playing the piano for his cousins and family members, Camden shows the power of song and music and how it can bring joy to everyone. Together we are a happy family that can accomplish anything we set our minds to. Sometimes it takes a village!

Miya de Vera -Sukiyaki Song Milena-ukulele accompaniment.mp4

Ue o Muite Arukou, also known as Sukiyaki, lyrics are about sadness and isolation. The original title, Ue o Muite Arukou, means, "I look up when I walk" followed by "namida ga kobore nai youni" which means, "so that my tears won't fall." The song gives strength and perseverance during hard times of isolation. Miya thought it would give us the strength needed to get through this together. She also thought that practicing and performing with her sister, who graduated last year from iLEAD during the beginning of the pandemic, made it more meaningful to her.

This song relates to the theme “Together We Can” because I think hope is a universal subject. In times of uncertainty and in times of joy, hope is always underlying. Believing in each other and that things can get better is a sign of hope at work. Regardless of what we are facing—stress, struggle, adversity—it is easy to get discouraged. It is easy to lose sight of what we can do to make the world a better place. I think that this song serves as a reminder that we can get through anything if our perspective is one of gratitude for lessons learned and belief that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The message of this song is a simple one: when you feel like giving up, hope will come.

I wrote this song during quarantine. We can do things together even if we aren't in the same place.
