Week 3 - Addition and Subtraction of Integers
Title
Duration
The Logic of Change: Modeling Neutralization and Directional Movement
2 x 35 Minutes
Learning Objective
Students will achieve transfer learning by accurately solving addition and subtraction integer problems. They will demonstrate mastery by formulating complex equations from contextual word problems and justifying their solutionsusing models of neutralization and directional movement, as measured by a comprehensive Unit Transfer Test (AoL).
In Week 3, AI and digital media primarily enable Transfer Learning and address Sign/Operation Confusion. The Virtual Two-Color Counter Tool reinforces the neutralization concept, providing visual proof for complex rules like subtracting a negative. Concurrently, the LLM Problem Decomposer acts as a crucial scaffold, helping students overcome the Literacy Gap by guiding them to accurately translate multi-step word problems into the correct integer equations before solving them. This blended support ensures students can flexibly apply conceptual understanding in novel contexts.
