Frequently Asked Questions:
Micro-credential could only exist with the support of creators like yourself. As such, we revenue model is based on a sharing economy model. Assuming that your proposal is made as an individual or individual group of creators and not by entity established in IIUM, then the net revenue sharing (after financial transaction fees) is 45% if instructors are directly managed by creators and 30% if instructors sharing are managed by MCU.
In this case, if the learners enrolled and pay RM100 for the fees, the net revenue is at RM 90 (6% for SST by the government and 4% average of credit/debit card fees) . Thus you be expecting to get RM40.50 per learner for a self-managed modules or RM27 for MCU managed instructor modules for individual creators. For group creators, the the sharing, is up to the approved sharing during the proposal.
You can download and submit all form in the top tab of this website "Forms & Proposal"
You can develop accredited academic or a stand-alone professional and personal development modules.
Accredited academic modules are modules that are unbundled from an accredited academic course. For example UNGS 1201 with 3 credit hours, could be unbundled into 3 micro-credential modules of 40 SLT hours each (1 credit hour)
Professional modules are modules that relates to a profession that someone has for example lawyer, engineer, doctor, architect, and which are governed by a professional body act in Malaysia.
Any other modules other than academic or professional modules. This modules are generally for public use and consumption and their own self and personal development. Modules such as cooking, sewing, fishing, repairing a car, parenting and even general leadership some example of personal development.
MCU would suggest that you build a one-off 4 hours micro-credential modules in personal development. That is the minimum requirements in developing a micro-credential moduels.
The minimum is 4 hours as required by the HRDF claim requirements, and the maximum is 40 hours per module. You could create a stack of modules with a maximum of 160 hours.
You need to identify the module learning outcome, the content, create a n instructor-centered video or audio , online activities and some form of assessment in micro-credential we call the learning artifact.
No, you need to unbundled the course and re-design them into a fully a cybergogy based modules with maximum of 40 hours SLT. This requires that the video limit to be change to 10 minutes maximum per content. A initial proposal and full proposal need to be submitted to verify that a micro-credential method is being adhere to when moving from face-to-cae or an open-distance-learning course method to a micro-credential modules method.
No, you need to re-design again, since the video limit need to edited to 10 minutes maximum per approved content by MCC. A initial proposal and full proposal need to be submitted to verify that a micro-credential method is being adhere to when moving from face-to-cae or an open-distance-learning course method to a micro-credential modules method.
There are two studios available in Gombak campus managed by OCAP and CPD. Please contact them personally for this arrangement. For Kuantan Campus, there are no facilities at the moment and we are currently working with the relevant management to get this up and running. For Pagoh, there are no facilities available at the moment, and we will be planning soon on this matter.
Please get in touch with CPD on this matter. They will help creators in getting the skills needed to develop the content into the platform.
There are many micro-credential modules available in the commercial platform, some are offered as free while some are for fee. Some of the great micro-credential platforms that you could look into when developing your own, either to benchmark their module content, their fees, number of learners or even to try one and have a feel are as follows:
Once you submit a initial proposal, the proposal need to be approved my MCC approval committee which meets once a month. If the modules is approved you have 90 days for one-off micro-credentials and 120 days for stacked micro-credential to develop and submit your full proposal. Once a full proposal is approved you have 90 days and 180 days respectively for one-off and stack microcredential for you to develop your content into the mico-credential platform.
The fastest that you could get your module to be listed in catalogue from your initial proposal is 2 months, assuming all approval is granted.
One of the cornerstone of microcredential modules is industry, community and market demand. The timeline is set to ensure that the module is still within the demand and market need. You can apply for an extension, but subject to MCC approval.
A stack development module template is available in excel, Please download them here
Please use and fill the template available in this website and email the proposal to nliza@iium.edu.my
Please use and fill the template available in this website and email the proposal to nliza@iium.edu.my
If the currently of knowledge change is manly due to content. and not the curriculum and the course outline does not change, then there is no need to re-submit a new full proposal. However, a review on the module content to make sure that it adheres to the IIUM MC standard is still required. In this case, MCLOC/MCLO need to approve your new content to be inserted into the catalogue.
Yes, it is acceptable to do a three micro-credential module each with 40 SLT hours.
Module 1 - 40 hours
Module 2 - 40 hours
Module 3 - 40 hours
Depending on whether it is an academic, professional or personal development modules stack, you are to choose:
1. Using form Micro Credential Final Proposal - Course Mapping Rev02 - since the MC is stacked and linked to an accredited COURSE (Thus this is for stacked academic modules).
2. Using form Micro Credential Final Proposal - Level Mapping Rev02 - since the MC is stacked and does not link to any accredited course. (This is is mainly for stacked professional and personal development modules)
First of all, just to clarify that Micro-Credential Unit does not deal with any programme level, and focus only on course level for academics. Thus, the master level is transparent to us, since a single course may be part of a study plan for multiple programmes (as in some of the foundation courses in accounts department). The answer is YES AND NO
Yes - it is possible to have a stack of microcredential modules (example:. 3 modules in the stack) which is equivalent to an accredited course to be offered as a professional module. However, since the MC stack is not approved by senate as having an equivalent to an accredited course, the learners would need to go through the standard credit transfer process which requires an coverage of the stacked micro-credential to the course to be evaluated on a case to case basis, to identify its 80% similarity. In this case, MCU would propose creators to create multiple one-off modules, get it approved, with final thought on how the stack should look like.
NO - it is not possible if the learners wants to have a hassle free credit transfer, which is not on a case-to-case basis. This would require that the MC stack is approved to be equivalent to the accredited course beforehand. A course level micro-credential would only be issued for an academic MC stack which have been recommended by MCC and endorsed by senate.
All staff in IIUM could submit a micro-credential proposal.
No, the colleague from different institution could not submit the micro-credential module proposal. You, however as a staff of IIUM could submit the proposal, and include his name as a group module co-creators. However, if the creators are entity in IIUM, then a discussion would need to be made with the relevant KCDIOM to propose the micro-credential.
Yes, it is possible to have a different modes of delivery. However, we need to bear in mind that micro-credential is a self-paced self-learn process, as such any blended arrangement need to still cater the basic principle of micro-credential of a personalised learning. The instructional design for micro-credential include learning outcome -> content -> delivery of content -> activity of learners -> building learning artefact -> credential.
The arrangement of what needs to be done within the group or IIUM entity is solely the discretion of the module creators.
NO, micro-credential is a self-paced, personalised learning, as such there are no minimum number. In comparative terms, we would call this independent study which usually could be taken during the last semester of the programme.
There are no restriction to the medium of instruction, provided that the creators have trained at least 1 instructor for the module. The module will be de-listed from the catalogue if there are no approved instructor for a module.
A benchmark could be performed using the current micro-credentials platforms such as EdX, Coursera, Udemy, Future Learn etc for professional and personal development modules. For up-skill and re-skill you could also visit Talent Corp which have various reports on the up-skill and re-skill needed for our current workforce.
Each KCDIOM will have their own guidelines regarding the micro-credential modules and content strategy. Please liaise with your KCDIOM Micro-Credential Liaison Officer (MCLO) for this matter.
No
For every module, the creator need to decide who is the coordinator KCDIOM. The coordinator KCDIOM will the owner of the module.
No
Micro-credential learner may never become a student of IIUM programme until he/she registers for a programme in IIUM. Enrollment in micro-credential modules does not in anyway indicate that a learner is a student of IIUM as thus given a matrix number etc. Typically, a micro-credential learner, may or may not need the credential from the module. However, if a micro-credential learner feels that he/she have completed enough module, he/she could apply for a credit transfer to an existing programme in IIUM or other IHL that recognize IIUM micro-credential. The credit transfer is subject to IIUM credit transfer procedure which will be updated time to time. Please refer to our latest credit transfer procedure for the latest information.
At the moment, all our modules are NON-HRDF claimable. However, the unit is working hard to ensure that our modules are all HRDF claimable which is beneficial for the industry players.
Creators are the one who is developing the module curriculum which include the lesson plan, video/audio delivery, the activity for the learners, and the learning artefact or assessment. This includes the rubric for the assessment. Instructors are the one that will deal directly with the learners. As such creators need to create the modules, and have approved catalogue and instructors just implement what the creators have in mind. Creators could also be assigned as instructors, but instructors are NOT creators.
Yes, as said earlier creators and instructors have a different role. Creators could be assigned as instructors but not the other way around. Instructors assignment only started once the module is in catalogue.
Instructors are to engage with the learners on a regular basis according to the guidelines by creators, and perform the activity and assessment of learning artefact. Instructors are to submit the learners list to MCU once a learners have is completed and competent in a module successfully.
The maximum fees that have been delegated by University Finance Committee (UFC) to Micro-Credential Committee is MYR 4999.99/module. As such, creators could put any fee on the module from MYR 0.01 to MYR 4999.99 per module/subject to MCC approval.
Micro-credential creators could effectively set fees as the range below:
MINIMUM hours per module of 4 hours, with fee ranges from MYR 0.01 to MYR 4999.99
MAXIMUM hours per module of 40 hours with fee ranges from MYR 0.01 to MYR 4999.99
It is advisable that all creators to perform their due diligence and benchmarking on the market prevailing fees to ensure that our fees are competitive.
Creators are open to propose any fees above MYR 5,000, but this would require MCC recommendation and UFC approval. It is important to note as well that UFC only have 4 meetings in a year, which may delay your micro-credential implementation. .
