Carbohydrates present in bacteria, viruses, fungi, and diseased cells differ significantly from those found on the cell surface of human cells. These key structural attributes can be utilized for vaccine development. Hence, there is a growing interest in the use of carbohydrates as antigens in vaccine formulations.
Our group is interested in the total synthesis of biologically significant carbohydrates and oligosaccharides. Carbohydrates possess an enormous promise for the development of new therapeutics and vaccines. Our group mainly focuses on the synthesis of cell surface glycans as vaccine antigens against bacterial and fungal pathogens.
On the other hand, we are also interested in developing carbohydrate-based vaccine adjuvants. Despite this potential, the progress of the field is hampered by the lack of well-defined oligosaccharides. Our group mainly focuses on efficient methods for glycosidic bond formation and total synthesis of well-defined oligosaccharides, particularly interested in pathogenic bacteria and fungi and further studies their immunogenicity.
