SYnchrophasor Measurement And Research (SYMAR) Lab
About Us
The SYMAR (read as /si:mar) Lab was established in 2012 in the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Ropar to bring together various cutting-edge research areas including Smart Grid Studies including synchrophasor assisted-grid stress assessment, state estimation, post-disturbance analysis, power system protection, real-time control, model validation, wide-area monitoring, automation and Resilience Enhancement. This research lab is under the supervision of Dr. Ranjana Sodhi, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Our Vision
“To create efficient tools and systems for the reliable, secure and stable operation of the Smart Grids”
The SYMAR Lab provides a hands-on experience through experiments that are vital for understanding various components of Smart Grids. The intensification of renewable energy resources and energy storage systems motivates the requirement of monitoring the dynamics of modern electric power system using real-time phasor measurement to enhance the resilience, reliability, and efficiency of the system. To achieve the benefits of this high speed time-synchronized measurements, the technology must be matched by advancements in computer technology, data communications, energy demand management, etc. The ultimate goal of this lab is to develop new planning-stage schemes, real-time monitoring, data processing and control applications based on synchrophasor measurements intended for education and research.
