The Two-Day Hands-on Workshop on DEM Simulation of Granular Materials was successfully conducted by the Granular and Colloids Lab, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Ropar, during 12–13 September 2025, under the SSR scheme sponsored by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF).
The workshop was designed to provide participants with a rigorous introduction to the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and its applications in the study of granular materials. A total of 30 participants, comprising faculty members and students, engaged in intensive sessions that combined theoretical discussions with hands-on training. The program included the installation and execution of simulations using LAMMPS, as well as the analysis and visualization of results through OVITO. Practical case studies such as granular flow in hoppers, sand pile formation, and the modeling of glass-like materials were examined in detail.
On successful completion of the workshop, participants were awarded certificates, marking the culmination of a comprehensive training program aimed at enhancing research capabilities in computational modeling of granular systems.
