Dr. Pradeep Kumar Dammala delivered a seminar talk titled "Seismic Resilient Strategy for Critical Infrastructure – Demonstration through Case Studies" on 24thFebraury at University of Illinois, Chicago hosted by Prof. Krishna Reddy.
Abstract: Earthquakes are the most unexpected and unavoidable natural disasters and critical infrastructure like bridges, multi-story residential buildings, nuclear power plants, hydroelectric dams, must be resilient and functional to ensure safety of public and conveyance of emergency amenities. Such heavy and critical infrastructure is traditionally supported through pile and caisson foundations. A comprehensive seismic resilient strategy is proposed to verify/requalify the stability of structures supported on deep foundations using integrated seismic analysis coupled with independent seismic soil structure interaction (SSSI) effects. The approach consists of three major steps starting from assessing the seismicity of the site followed by the local soil effects and seismic structural analysis incorporating SSSI effects. Site-specific soil characteristics such as seismic ground response analysis and liquefaction are crucial in the strategy. The proposed methodology will be demonstrated through the following case studies: offshore wind turbine foundations, caisson supported bridge and pile-supported multistoried building located in active seismic regions of India.
