Master’s Dissertation
Title: Politics of Tribal Development: A Critique of Development among Tribals
Duration: January – July 2021
Supervisor: Prof. Ramdas Rupavath, University of Hyderabad.
This dissertation critically examines the dominant narratives of tribal development in India, focusing on the ideological undercurrents of Hindutva and their implications for Adivasi communities. Centered on the Lambada tribes of Telangana, the study interrogates whether contemporary development paradigms genuinely contribute to the empowerment of tribal communities or reproduce new forms of marginalization.
The research explores how Sanskritization and Westernization intersect with state-led development projects, often reframing tribal identities through cultural assimilation, moral regulation, and market integration. By foregrounding tribal perspectives on development, the study challenges linear, top-down models of progress and calls for a more nuanced, community-informed understanding of empowerment, autonomy, and resistance in tribal regions
