Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and workshop with stakeholders of the Krishna River Basin

[7 - 8 January, 2020, IIT Hyderabad]

Workshop report

The FGD and workshop is a two-day event (7th & 8th January, 2020). The event comprises a 15-minute (an informal) talk by respective persons of the different sectors of the Krishna River Basin and then discussions among all participants. Thus, it provides a nice opportunity for the stakeholders and decision makers at a much higher level in evaluating existing vulnerability and resiliency of the system as well as drawing new mitigation measures and strategies to increase resiliency to deal with climate extremes in the river basin. Given that all who have a stake in the river basins is involved, the activity provides much more closer realistic picture of the issues and challenges in the basin.

Objectives of the FGD and workshop:

  1. Understand the association of various sectors and stakeholders in the context of water resources in the basin

  2. Identify existing systems/tools for managing floods and droughts in urban, agriculture and water resources management contexts

  3. Assess the current management practices in water (reservoir, irrigation, water supply etc.), hydropower generation, urban flood mitigation and agriculture sectors for their vulnerability and resiliency. This will be done via focus group discussions and surveys.

  4. Develop strategies for adaptation and mitigation of hydroclimate extremes

  5. Get familiar with simple (open source) visualization tools to assist stakeholders/decision makers

The strategic adaptation and resiliency enhancing strategies resulted in this project will be adopted in the regional development planning of the selected area. The associated data and results of this project will be presented using GUI based visualization tools in a website such that it can be easily understood and accessed by policy makers and relevant stakeholders in the study regions. Thus, the whole activity may increase the awareness, consequently involvement of different levels of stakeholders and decision makers which will have great impact on translation of scientific understanding into adaptation of mitigation measures to increase the societal resiliency.
