Research Interests:
• Laser powder bed fusion and binder jetting of structural, shape memory, light weight, biomaterials, & composite materials
• Process parameter optimization, microstructure evolution, and post-treatment of 3D printed parts
• Data analytics in metal additive manufacturing
• Micro-computed tomography and synchrotron dynamic x-ray radiography
• Electrochemical and high-temperature corrosion behavior of additively manufactured parts

Ph.D. Student
Mohammad Jamalkhani is a doctoral student in the Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering Department at the IIT, majoring in Materials Science and Engineering.
Mohammad joined Amir’s group in January 2021 after working seven months as a research assistant at the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems (CAVS). At CAVS, he got hands-on experience in researching Ti-6Al-4V additively manufactured material through several research projects. Now, his research focuses on binder jetting 3D printing and the development of advanced materials, such as 316L Stainless Steel.
Jamalkhani pursued his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Semnan University in Semnan, Iran. In his undergraduate program, he worked for two years as a research assistant at Irankhodro Powertrain Company (IPCo), a powertrain R&D in Tehran, Iran. At IPCo, his research was concentrated on investigating the high-cycle bending fatigue and fracture behaviors in ductile cast iron crankshafts.

Meisam Khademitab is a doctoral student in the Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering Department at the IIT, majoring in Materials Science and Engineering.
I am working with SS316 and 17-4ph materials, aiming to advance our understanding of this process and its applications. Also, I have some experience working with NiTi and Copper.
I hold a master’s degree in manufacturing and production from Semnan University, Iran, where I developed a solid foundation in CNC machining and a deep understanding of manufacturing processes.
In addition to my research, I have been involved in mentoring activities. I have served as a Teaching Assistant for courses such as Design of Machine Elements, System Analysis and Control, and Material Science. Working with enthusiastic students has been a rewarding experience, allowing me to share my knowledge and passion.

Master Student
Iman Dashtgerd is a Master's Student in the Material, Mechanical, and Aerospace department at Illinois Institute of Technology majoring in Manufacturing Engineering (AdditiveTrack). He has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tehran-North Azad University.
Iman worked for 4 years in Qozzati industrial factory as a Mechanical Design and reverse engineer and a year in Damirchi Ind Co. As a Mechanical engineer focusing on Finite element analysis(FEA) and Computational fluid dynamics(CFD). His current research in the AMIR lab is on the advanced manufacturing of thermoelectric materials and laser powder bed fusion of metallic components.

Master Student
Billythong (Billy) Trinh is M.S. in Advanced Manufacturing, Additive Manufacturing Track student at IIT. He received his B.S. at NIU in Mechanical Engineering, with an emphasis on Advanced Computation and Simulation (FEA and CFD)
Billy possesses a solid background in engineering with a focus on manufacturing safety-critical components, having garnered two years of experience as a Tooling Engineer within the automotive sector.
His recent professional endeavors include a productive internship at DMG Mori in the capacity of an R&D Engineer. In this role, Billy made substantive contributions by actively participating in mechanical design tasks and the formulation and execution of planned design of experiments (DoE) protocols. His involvement directly pertained to the advancement of the forthcoming iteration of the Lasertec SLM 30 machine. Over the course of his tenure at DMG Mori, Billy also dedicated approximately 400 hours to the operational oversight and management of the SLM machine.
Presently, Billy is engaged in research activities at AMIR Labs, centering on the comprehensive comprehension of the process-performance dynamics inherent to structural, lightweight metal powders within the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) domain. This research underscores his commitment to pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing knowledge and innovation.

Kejsi Bishaj is an undergraduate student in the Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering Department majoring in Aerospace Engineering. She was formerly a lead aerodynamicist at SEDS/ Illinois Tech Rocketry.
Research Topic: She is currently a research assistant, helping study the process-structure-property-performance relationship in additive manufactured parts.
B.Sc. Student
Sola An is an undergraduate student in the Mechanics, Materials and Aerospace Engineering Department at the IIT, majoring in Materials Science and Engineering. Through a joint degree program with IIT, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Hongik University in South Korea. She will start working at Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS).
Research Topic: Her current research is on the non-contact power spreader in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. She also has extensive hands-on research experience in metallography, microstructure analysis, microhardness mapping, and data analytics in AM.

Ethan Jenssen is an undergraduate student in the Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering Department, majoring in Mechanical Engineering and pursuing a minor in Materials Science. He previously worked as a lab technician for Hewlett-Packard Inc, where he operated and processed material from metal binder jet printers.
Research Topic: His research focuses on advancing the state of binder jet technology through parameter optimization to improve densification behavior and mechanical properties.

Katherine Galko is an undergraduate student in the Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering Department, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. She was a manufacturing engineering intern at Rolls-Royce for the past two summers, most recently working in research and development.
Research Topic: Her research currently focuses on material properties in additive manufactured parts, specifically with binder jetting.

Jennifer Li is a junior at Neuqua Valley High School who enjoys challenging herself in and out of school. As a musician, she has played both piano and viola for many years and achieved high proficiency. She has also pursued her passions for robotics and mathematics by competing in contests at the regional and state levels.
Always curious to expand her knowledge, Jennifer is currently investigating the world of additive manufacturing and the many areas of engineering. She hopes to integrate her love of music, science, and innovation as she builds the groundwork for a bright future career. Though unsure of what the future holds, Jennifer intends to face it with an open mind and hard work.

Mohammad Fazalul (Fazal) Haque is a senior at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville Illinois.
Fazal's current research interests are in Materials Science, Quantum Computing, and Machine Learning. At his school, he has taken a variety of math and science classes, in addition to PLTW Engineering classes. Fazal's current research in the AMIR lab is on additive manufacturing, specifically binder jetting.

Niv Roychowdhury is a junior at Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois who is currently interested in research on the combination of economics, consumer products, and additive manufacturing.
Niv has taken a multitude of math, chemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering classes at his high school as well as participated in many math and science bowl competitions to further his interest in math and science.
