Australia, Feb 25 (Daily Mirror) - Former Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan has obtained Australian citizenship following a citizenship ceremony, Australian MP Jason Wood said.
"He will be remembered for his innovative strokes and as a destructive opener. He was also a useful spin bowler and an outstanding fielder. We congratulate Dilshan for a fine career and wish him every success in the future," ICC Chief Executive Richardson said.
In 2009, at the World T20 in England, Tillakaratne Dilshan added his name to the list of cricket’s out-of-the-box thinkers and in doing so defined a tournament, brought a unique shot to the world’s attention and added a new word to the cricketing lexicon.
Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardene enjoyed batting against the toothless English bowlers and totally dominated them to weave an entertaining 145 runs partnership for the 2nd wicket. Batting first against England in the Group stages of the 2014 World T20, The Lankans lost Kusal Perera early. But Dilshan and Jayawardene batted sturdily and ensured a formidable total of 189/4 after 20 overs. The pair could be separated in the 17th over of the match after Jayawardene (89 from 51 balls) was clean bowled by Chris Jordan ending the 145 runs stand. Dilshan (55 from 47 balls) also followed him in the next over after getting caught by Jordan off the bowling of Jade Dernbach. The pair entertained the crowd hitting 15 fours and 5 sixes during their stay.
The explosive pair of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya teamed up together to decimate West Indies bowling attack at Nottingham during the 2009 World T20. West Indies asked Sri Lanka to bat first. Jayasuriya commenced the fireworks in the second over and started to belt fours and sixes. Dilshan, on the other hand, took a couple of over to settle in but soon after he found his rhythm in the 6th over when he brought their fifty-run stand in style with a four. The hundred-run mark was also touched in no time inside the 10th over. This time, it was Jayasuriya who hit a four to bring up the landmark. Finally, the moment of respite for the Windies team in the 13th over, after part-timer Lendl Simmons managed to trap Jayasuriya leg before to break the partnership. The pair put up 124 runs for the first wicket with the Matara Mauler contributing 81 runs off just 47 balls.
Contrast that with Sri Lanka who usually have most of their in-form batsmen in the top order. Dilshan was one of them, making an unbeaten 161, his highest ODI score. Sangakkara celebrated his 400th ODI with his 22nd century having come into bat in the 25th over. Sri Lanka also became the only side to lose just one wicket in a 50-over innings as they ended with 332 for 1. The Dilshan-Sangakkara partnership added 210 runs in 25.3 overs for the unbroken second wicket, following the 122-run opening stand between Dilshan and Lahiru Thirimanne.
