After he was crowned as the "Observer Schoolboy cricketer of the Year" initially, he went on to grab the attention of the cricket world and started out his debut after getting drafted in 1989-1990 in One day International matches against Australia in 1990 and Test matches against New Zealand in 1991 which was one crown of his achievements.
With his batting partner Romesh, Sanath, Well known for his talent as an All Rounder displayed his strategic and aggressive batting style which caught the attention of a worldwide audience and later on led to Sri Lanka team winning the world cup in 1996.
His bowling style was un-orthodox as he was a left arm spinner but with a very complicated style which made him stand out with the other spin-type bowlers in his segment. Even though he was a spinner, he added more style by in-cooperating fast and pace bowling action along with his original spinning style, and this led him to be an all-rounder as he was able to stun the batsmen with his bowling style.
shortly after the extravagant win in the 1996 world cup segment he was crowned as one of the Wisden cricketers of the year in 1997. Later on his leadership qualities were recognized and he captained the Sri Lanka team from 1998 to 2003 where he displayed his all-round qualities in cricket and as a captain and shortly earned the name "Master Blaster"
