In Test cricket, Murali is unbeatable in his skills. He holds the record for the most wickets in Test matches, with an incredible tally of 800 wickets in 133 matches. He was a nightmare for opponents because of his ability to trick batsmen with his variations. 

He played ODI cricket for Sri Lanka from 1993 to 2011. In his ODI career, Murali played a total of 350 matches, taking a remarkable 534 wickets. At the time of his retirement, he held the record for the highest number of wickets in ODIs.

Murali played a crucial role in Sri Lanka's victory in the 1996 Cricket World Cup. His outstanding performances throughout the tournament helped Sri Lanka to their maiden World Cup title. In the 2007 Cricket World Cup, he was the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka and one of the top wicket-takers of the tournament overall. He also played in the 2003 and 2011 Cricket World Cups, contributing significantly to Sri Lanka's performances.

Beyond international cricket, Murali showcased his skills in various domestic leagues worldwide. He participated in tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Big Bash League (BBL) and Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
