ONOS is a significant initiative by the Government of India, spearheaded by the Ministry of Education. Its core aim is to democratize access to high-quality international scholarly research articles and journal publications for students, faculty, and researchers across India's academic and research institutions.
What is ONOS?
Launched with the vision of making India 'Atmanirbhar' (self-reliant) and contributing to 'Viksit Bharat @ 2047', ONOS intends to acquire national licenses for e-journal and database subscriptions from leading international publishers. This means a vast collection of over 13,000 journals from approximately 30 major global publishers will become accessible to eligible institutions nationwide.
Key Objectives & Benefits for IIIT Pune:
As a government higher education institution, IIIT Pune is a direct beneficiary of the ONOS scheme. This initiative offers:
Expanded Access: Provides comprehensive access to a rich 'goldmine of knowledge' in top-tier scholarly journals across various disciplines, significantly enhancing our library's e-resources.
Promoting Research: Encourages core and interdisciplinary research by ensuring that students, faculty, and researchers have the necessary academic resources at their fingertips, regardless of their location.
Cost Efficiency: Centralized national licensing reduces the financial burden on individual institutions for journal subscriptions.
Digital Empowerment: Aims to bridge the knowledge gap and empower institutions in both urban and rural areas with equal opportunities to thrive in scientific and academic pursuits.
IIIT Pune's Role and Implementation:
Being an Institute of National Importance, IIIT Pune plays a crucial role in supporting the Prime Minister's vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047' through this initiative. Our institute has swiftly moved to facilitate access to ONOS resources:
On-Campus Access: Starting January 7, IIIT Pune began providing IP-based on-campus access to all ONOS resources for our research scholars, students, faculty, and staff.
Remote Access Success: To further extend accessibility beyond the campus, the Library and Information Center worked tirelessly, coordinating with INFED, INFLIBNET, ONOS Support, and individual publishers. These continuous efforts led to a significant achievement: on February 14, the Library and Information Center proudly announced the successful implementation of Remote Access to all ONOS resources.
Kudos to all the supporting hands in this regard, from our dedicated Library staff to our esteemed faculty, and utmost gratitude to our Director and Registrar for their invaluable support in making this possible.
Implementation and Management:
The ONOS scheme is implemented and managed by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, an autonomous inter-university center of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The initiative is set to roll out in phases, beginning January 1, 2025.
ONOS represents a monumental step towards strengthening India's research ecosystem and fostering a vibrant culture of innovation and scholarly excellence across all government higher education and R&D institutions.
