A captivating educational expedition unfolded as ten students hailing from the PGDFM Batch of 2024 embarked on a mesmerizing journey to the state of Karnataka. Their purpose was to delve into the diverse facets of forestry management as part of their fieldwork, an integral aspect of their course curriculum. For a duration of three weeks, these enthusiastic learners were closely associated with the Karnataka State Forest Department.
The enthralling experience commenced with a visit to the Central Nursery of Dharwad, where they immersed themselves in the intricate world of nursery management. Subsequently, they delved into the realm of wood-based industries, gaining valuable insights into this vital aspect of forestry.
The students' thirst for knowledge extended to Gadag Zoo, where they learned about the intricacies of zoo management. Venturing beyond forest boundaries, they explored the significance of trees outside of forests and even witnessed live experiments in farm and agro forestry.
In their pursuit of a comprehensive understanding, the students attended theoretical classes at the esteemed WALMI (Water and Land Management Institute, Dharwad) where they learnt about watershed management.
The journey took a turn towards the Timber Depot of the renowned Dandeli Teak, affording the students an opportunity to grasp the timber harvesting process firsthand.
Adding a dash of adventure to their learning expedition, the group found themselves exhilarated during their night stay at Anti Poaching Camps (APCs) within the Kali Tiger Reserve.
The educational escapade continued with visits to Bandipur and Nagarhole National Park, where the students engaged in exciting activities like trekking and jungle safaris, allowing them to observe wildlife in its natural habitat.
The pinnacle of their journey was the Kabini backwater morning safari, organized by JLR. This experience emerged as a crowning glory, leaving an indelible mark on the students' memories.
Through this transformative journey, the group fostered a deep appreciation for the intricacies of forestry management and wildlife conservation, making this fieldwork an unforgettable and enriching experience.
