To generate knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial gene expression. Elucidating how these processes are regulated is a critical step toward understanding and addressing mitochondrial dysfunction and its role in disease. Beyond its scientific mission, the GenMit lab is committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists.
The UNAM Central Library is one of the most iconic buildings of the campus.
Our Institute is part of the University City Campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). This extensive complex is located in the south of Mexico City and is renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The campus houses the central library, the Olympic stadium, museums, over 30 faculties and institutes, and an ecological reserve.
The GenMit lab was founded in 2025 by Diana Rubalcava-Gracia. After almost six years of postdoctoral research at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, Diana recognised critical gaps in our understanding of how the mitochondrial gene expression machinery operates in mammals and its role in disease. She established the GenMit lab with the purpose of addressing this fundamental challenge.
