The Silver Cord program is available to all high school students with the purpose of encouraging, recognizing, and rewarding volunteerism and community service.
The work done through this program not only benefits the community, but will encourage students to develop their own leadership and citizenship skills. This is a voluntary, self-directed program, so students are responsible for seeking out opportunities & submitting all of their hours within 30 days of the volunteer activity.
To receive Silver Cord Honors at graduation, students need to complete a minimum of 100 hours of approved service by May 1st of their senior year. In order to encourage a variety of volunteering experiences, students must volunteer in at least three different areas within a maximum of 60 hours per area. (For example: volunteering in the nursery at church, at youth sports camps, and at the thrift store.) Volunteering can't be done for monetary compensation, during the student's class time, or for family members.
Silver Cord hours are required for admittance into National Honor Society, are impressive on resumes, and can lead to multiple scholarship opportunities! Iowa Falls - Alden High School students completing at least 100 approved hours of service during their high school experience will earn the distinguished Silver Cord Honor. Recipients of this honor will be recognized at their graduation by wearing a silver cord with their cap and gown, and they will also receive special mention in the commencement program.
