The Erasmus+ project at the Juan Sebastián Elcano Secondary School would not exist without the European Union and its co-financing, as well as other educational aspects related to bilingual education, PROA (Spanish Association of Educational Institutions), ZTS (Spanish Secondary Schools), etc. That's why raising awareness about the functioning of the European Union and its institutions is one of our goals. Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the signing of the accession treaty between Spain and Portugal.

First-year high school students learned a little more about Europe today, one of the Erasmus+ objectives, with talks about the culture of several English-speaking countries. This activity is part of the program to celebrate Europe Day, which took place on May 9th.

Our garden is bearing its first fruits of the season thanks to the students who are doing the growing work, learning about agriculture and healthy food. We continue to promote a sustainable lifestyle through the Erasmus+ program.

We recall some of the topics that Craig, our language assistant, has covered in recent days in various classes.

For example, he helped biology students with their presentations on the effects of drugs, talked about how to order in restaurants and the environment in English, discussed the Lincoln Battalion, Protestants in the 16th century, and the colonization of America in history, discussed mechanisms in technology, calculus and strategies in math, and volleyball in PE.

We're reminiscent of some of the topics Ilia, the language assistant, has covered with students in various subjects over the past few days.

For example, they've discussed The Metamorphosis and the origin of preferences in philosophy, Google Docs in technology, the technical aspects of volleyball in PE, the human body and health, the Easter tradition, and US culture and heritage in English. We also invited her to take the English tour of Sanlúcar, which was prepared by the students in ECO (Oral Expression and Communication) and FPB.

Last Friday, May 9th, we celebrated Europe Day. Some of our groups played a European-themed kahoot created by Erasmus+ students. Others created a megaposter about inclusion, tolerance, human rights, and more. Finally, others made trees with their favorite books written by both Spanish and international authors, trees they began creating on World Book Day.

Today, our third and fourth-grade students traveled to IES El Picacho for a performance of the English play "The End of the Beginning." They practiced the language while discussing topics such as Europe and Brexit, a perfect topic for Europe Day (May 9) and a key aspect of our Erasmus+ program.

Thanks a lot, Pablo de Olavide University!

From our school, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Pablo de Olavide University for the warm welcome we received to our first-year students in Humanities and Social Sciences. It has been an enriching experience to know the university facilities firsthand, especially the translation lab, which sparked great interest among our students.

We would like to give a special thanks to María, Dean of the Faculty, and Elisa, the Secretary, for their kindness and commitment to education. A million thanks to the wonderful Alba and Cristina for guiding us with such kindness and professionalism throughout the visit. You have been excellent guides.

Today, April 23rd, we have commemorated The International Book Day at our school. We have prepared a Books Charity Market, whose benefits will go to Afanas. Inclusion, equality, and solidarity are values we promote in our daily work and through the Erasmus+ program.

We would like to thank the whole educational community for the large donation of books for this event.

This week, 1st-grade students participated in the "Blind Date with a Book" competition, which involves finding famous book titles after reading several clues.

8 April

This year, 2nd Bachillerato students will take the B2 exam for the first time after completing the Certification Test Preparation course, which is taught as an elective in first and second years of high school.

The exam will be held on April 22nd and 23rd. Good luck!

Today, April 2nd, we commemorate World Autism Awareness Day.

The students from the Special Classroom and the 3rd and 4th grade Diversity classes have worked together on this beautiful mural to commemorate this day as well as March 21st: World Down Syndrome Day.

With it, they teach us that we are all different but we are all equal, and although we each have different abilities, they are infinite.

We will continue working for inclusion and equal opportunities, thanks also to Erasmus+.

Our 1st-grade students have participated in MASTERCHEF JUNIOR: ELCANO COOKS , putting their culinary skills to the test. 🥕 🍳 🍰 They worked in pairs to cook a healthy dish that also included an instructional recipe. Teamwork, collaboration, and enthusiasm were the star ingredients of this edition. 💫 💫 Special congratulations to Dilan García and Ivan Domínguez, who won the award for their exquisite Newton's Cake.

Third- and fourth-year diversification students took a guided tour of the Algaida Pine Forest to learn about the flora, fauna, and wide variety of living beings that inhabit this protected ecosystem. Protecting the environment is one of the goals we aim to achieve through the Erasmus+ program.

Last Tuesday, the 2nd-grade students took a historical tour of our city, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, with the Department of Geography and History. Learning about the heritage that surrounds us is one of the goals of our Erasmus+ project.

Yesterday, March 20th, 4th-year ESO students visited the Rota Naval Base, where they were able to see the ship and the fleet of aircraft, as well as take a tour of the facilities.

Our high school theater company premiered "La barraca" this week, a play that transported us to the world of Federico García Lorca. Great actors and actresses! They moved us, made us laugh, and (we admit it) we also cried a little at the end. Thanks to Cris, Laura, Rebeca, Norberto, Irene, Angelo, Juan, Manuel, Ainhoa, Xiana, Julián, Juanjo, and Cary for their effort and hours of rehearsal. And to @teatroestudiojerez for the production, costume design, and advice. Alberto and Ana always come to our rescue! Such talent and such heart! Now we know who won the battle of time. Can you guess?

Also on Andalusia Day, first and second year ESO students participated in a "Solidarity Race for Valentina," thanks to the "Un grito a la esperanza FOP" (A Cry for Hope) Association. Solidarity, equality, and inclusion are values we also aim to promote through our Erasmus+ project.

This week, funds will be collected and donated to the association.

Today we celebrated Andalusia Day at the school. We began with the Andalusian anthem, thanks to the students and the Music Department for this magnificent performance. Then, there were many varied activities, which you can see in the proram, and in which students were exceptionally involved. We want to thank them for their participation.

Today, the first-year bilingual students took a humanistic cultural tour of the city of Cádiz. This activity was organized by the Philosophy Department.

Today we're sharing some of the activities Craig, our language assistant, has been doing with the students in their various bilingual classes. In addition to practicing the use of modals and comparatives in English classes while learning a little more about their culture, they've held quizzes about equations and percentages and played card games to better understand the decimal system in math. Through a quiz, they learned about hormones in biology. In history, they discussed the First World War, diversity and immigration, and the Roaring Twenties. Finally, they explored the usefulness of various technological mechanisms in everyday life and practiced Long Ball Chaos in physical education.

Today, we want to tell you about some of the activities that Ilia, the language assistant, has conducted with our school's students in the various bilingual classes, alongside the leading teachers. They discussed customs and traditions in different cultures, practiced expressing likes and dislikes, and practiced using manners, learned about the different materials in technology class, learned a little more about prehistory, discussed anthropology and philosophy, and even created their own imaginary planet with its rules and laws. Finally, they shared what love means to them to celebrate Valentine's Day—everything in English, of course.

An incredible day in nature!

Our first-year high school students enjoyed a hiking trip to Grazalema, a unique experience full of exercise and connection with the environment. Without a doubt, environmental awareness and respect are another of our main objectives in the Erasmus+ program.

Today, Saturday, was the last day of Erasmus+ activities with our beloved Lycée "Jean Dautet," and this time we covered more natural topics.

We thank Fali for her kindness and for the excellent, completely selfless explanation about the fishing pens, located in our neighboring town of Chipiona.

We also visited the Chipiona Lighthouse, the tallest in Spain, where they explained how it works before we climbed up. Finally, thanks to @aytochipiona and its mayor for being so kind to our French colleagues.

We don't say goodbye... but see you soon!

Today, E+ students have visited Cádiz, the city of La Pepa. There, they were able to experience its entire history with a dramatized tour, learning about important events such as the 1812 Constitution and everything related to it, as well as its vast monumental heritage.

They also concluded with French songs and typical Cádiz tangos.

Today was a very pleasant day for our Erasmus+ group.

The morning began with students participating in classes. Some even brought a guitar so they could learn more about flamenco!

Next, the school's equality network presented its work at our school with the 3rd year ESO members, so they could learn how we work on equality.

Later, they made short films, which we will upload to our YouTube channel, on topics such as democracy, immigration, discrimination, and even human rights, promoting these values among the students.

We ended the day with activities on bullying and how to combat it, and with the winners of our Goosechase mission competition.

Before moving on to the wonderful time we had with the families, whom we thank for their involvement in the program, we distributed participation certificates to the French students, their tutors Roxana and Sylvia, and Marc, a teacher who is jobshadowing at our school with colleagues from the Geography and History Department. We also thank our historians for welcoming Marc so warmly.

Today, our Erasmus+ group visited and explored the city of Seville, discovering our capital's rich historical and monumental heritage.

The French group enjoyed the Royal Alcázares, as well as other iconic monuments, thanks to the tour created by our students.

Welcome day for our colleagues from the Jean Dautet French school in La Rochelle, France.

We would like to thank Lucía López, Carmen Pacheco, @ismaelperez.music, and Lucas Rodríguez for the sevillanas that enlivened the ceremony.

The 4th-grade students then presented a quiz show about the European Union, in which they participated in mixed teams.

Later, they spent time in French class exchanging views with the students in that subject.

After breakfast, they headed to @ayto_sanlucar, where, as always, we were welcomed with open arms. We especially thank @carmenalvare_ for these thoughtful gestures for our students and the French school, as well as for the hospitality they received.

Afterward, the students visited Santiago Castle and took a city tour prepared by the Spanish students to showcase the historical and monumental heritage of our town.

We also thank the bar "El Conejo" for the lunch we enjoyed today.

On January 30th, our school celebrated Peace Day with workshops on immigration led by the Cardjin association, one of the topics covered in our Erasmus+ project.

We also thank the school's teachers and former classmates for the staged reading of the play "Picnic", set during the war.

Craig and Ilia haven't stopped these past few days. Covering all levels of secondary school and the first year of Bachillerato, they've talked about topics such as adolescence, our relationship with technology, Gothic cathedrals, comparatives and superlatives, their tastes in sports, the Spanish Civil War in the Americas, the era of the Black Death, physical geography, and more. They've even played a new game called "Longball Chaos" and pretended to be their own continent. All of this has been done alongside the bilingual teachers.

After Christmas, Ilia and Craig are back in full swing helping our students with English through the various topics they've covered over the past few days. For example, they talked about the Napoleonic and Peninsular Wars, Gothic cathedrals in the Middle Ages, the polar regions, and Alaska. They converted imperial units to the metric system and also played Guess What and math logic games, among other activities. We're delighted with them!

15 December, 2024

These last two weeks have been shorter than usual. Even so, our students have had enough time to enjoy again with our language assistants, Ilia and Craig.

For instance, during the History lessons, Craig have talked to them about the industrial revolution, the plague and the crusades, in the different courses of the ESO. In 1st ESO, they have made interactive games about arithmetics, powers and decimal numbers in the Math class. He also talked to them about the celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States, his home country.

With Ilia, they have made clothing descriptions in EPVA (3rd ESO), they have learned about different recycling methods practiced in the United States (2nd ESO) during the Technology lesson, they have carried out a debate on nature and culture in Philosophy in 1st baccalaureate and, of course, being the dates that they are, students have known about the traditional celebration of Christmas in the States during the English lessons both in 4th and 3rd year of ESO and diversification through different games, making posters, etc.

This year, as a new feature, the 2H students made mini Christmas trees with recycled products in their Technology class. We can't forget that recycling and caring for the environment are among the basic principles of our Erasmus+ project.

Last week, 3rd grade students had a great time with Ilia, the language assistant, and her detective game, as well as learning about Thanksgiving, a traditional celebration in her country, which she also talked about in 1st year of high school and 2nd year of ESO. They also played games in English during technology class, learned how to make descriptions in the EPVA class and, finally, practiced yoga in Physical Education.

Last week, students practised talking about habits in the past and comparing photos with Craig, the language assistant. They also got to know better the Thanksgiving celebration during English class.

In 2nd year ESO they talked about the different parts of castles and monasteries, while 4th year ESO got to know the Industrial Revolution in more depth in Geography and History.

The students also had a good time with Ilia, the language assistant, these days. 2nd year ESO talked about how to recycle different materials in technology, 3rd year ESO learned vocabulary about crimes and practiced the use of the past tense in English with a detective game, while 4th year practiced vocabulary about talents and skills in English.

These days have been super busy with Craig, the language assistant. In maths, 1st year ESO has played Fortress Riddle (mathematical riddles), trick or treat logic puzzle, and has done a mental calculation tournament, 3rd year ESO has learned about safety in the technology workshop and about electrical circuits, while 4th year has discovered and had fun with a new game called Flag Football.

Today our language assistants have got to know our culture a little bit better thanks to the celebration of the Day of Flamenco and they have enjoyed the different performances carried out at our school.

This week has been unusual due to the student strike and the suspension of classes due to the weather alert. Even so, Craig and Ilia, our language assistants, have had time to share many moments with the students in class.

For example, Craig has suggested games to the 4th grade students to encourage speed in PE, helped the technology students understand the topic in English, practiced with the 2nd grade students talking about habits in the past in English class, talked to them about Romance in history class and promoted knowledge of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and excretory systems with Edpuzzle and Gimkit in biology.

On the other hand, Ilia was in the EPVA class talking about the description and drawing of simple and complex shapes with 3rd grade ESO students, practiced vocabulary about materials and their properties in technology, discussed the topic of nature and human culture with 1st grade baccalaureate students in philosophy and played "Who stole the cookie?" in English class.

Last day in La Rochelle, although many people think they will definitely return. Because of the beauty of its streets, its port, its market, its... (ellipses) Today's summary is about that, ellipses. Because we cannot list the number of beautiful places in La Rochelle, nor the fish we have seen in the city's aquarium, nor the emotions of our students (and those of the Lycée Jean Dautet) when sharing the last activities and saying ~goodbye~ until soon. And this experience ends, like this summary, with the ellipses that remind us that our students are not saying goodbye to their French friends, but that soon (this time in Sanlúcar) they will meet again to...

Getting up early is always hard, but even less so if you want to visit new places and continue to live experiences.

The day begins at the beautiful train station in La Rochelle to go and see Rochefort, a beautiful city with about 25,000 inhabitants. There, we visit a natural treatment plant (a set of lagoons in steps) where they explain how it works and we observe the birds that come to the lagoons with binoculars and telescopes.

In the afternoon we go to the Corderie Royale de Rochefort, a spectacular building that Louis XIV ordered to be built where ropes (cables) for the French navy were made. We learnt to make ropes and we took part in a workshop on bracelets made from sailors' knots.

We return by train to La Rochelle to attend dinner at the Lycée. The cooks were the French and Spanish students who prepared typical dishes of the country during the week. A fun dinner that ends with the 30 students dancing sevillanas in the school canteen. Farewell is approaching, but there is still much to enjoy.

The third day in La Rochelle begins with a walk from the Lycée to the port. During this journey, the Elcano students share their experiences from the previous night with the French host families (many have taken the opportunity to cook, others to watch a film, etc.). At the port, we board "Le Français", the last polar ship made of wood. There they explain to us how it was built and the students carry out activities related to the consequences of Climate Change on the poles and the rest of the planet.

It is time to find a place in the sun but sheltered from the icy wind to have a picnic with the French students with food prepared by the host families. After a short break, we continue to discover the coastal part of the city and a sailor who has crossed the Atlantic Ocean four times and who belongs to the environmental organisation "Echo Mer" speaks to us passionately about the importance of taking care of our seas.

Tonight, the students of this fantastic exchange will have dinner together to continue creating bonds and memories.

After yesterday's wonderful welcome, today we had a day full of content. In the morning, after being welcomed by the school principal and the management team of the Lycée Jean Dautet, the students of Elcano and the French school carried out activities to get to know each other better, to value the Erasmus experience and to become aware of some ecological problems through language games.

After eating in their enormous canteen, we went to visit the interesting Bunker museum, which is located in the city centre and where we learned more about the history of the Nazis' passage through La Rochelle. After this visit, the students of both schools carried out a photography rally which was, despite the rain and the cold, fun and very enriching. The night, which they will spend with the French families, will serve to recharge their batteries to continue with this unforgettable experience.

Today our institute is back in action with the Erasmus+ programme.

After a trip by car, plane and bus, the students of the IES Elcano have been greeted with shouts of "Hello, welcome!" by 15 students from the Lycée Jean Dautet in La Rochelle (France).

The connection between them has been immediate, and after a round of introductions (in Spanish the French and in French the students from Sanlúcar) they have gone together to walk around this beautiful city on the French Atlantic coast, before starting tomorrow with the scheduled activities that will be based on the cultural and monumental heritage of the area, and will deal with environmental issues and also the importance of the European community nowadays.

Among other activities, last week Craig did Maths problems and operations with whole numbers with the 1st year ESO students using decks of cards, he played sports games with the 1st year Baccalaureate students to practice some physical abilities such as speed, he talked to the 4th year ESO students about how they could become knights in the Middle Ages in History class and he talked about daily routines and told jokes in the English class with the 4th year Diversification students. On the other hand, Ilia played games using the digital screen to locate the countries of Europe with the 1st year ESO students in Geography and talked to the 4th year ESO students about means of transport in English.

Ilia and Craig, as language assistants, bring part of their culture to our classrooms by telling our students about the origin of Halloween, playing related games, making them create their own monsters, etc. But also, and off-topic, Craig in Geography and History has helped them to better understand the French Revolution, while with Ilia the students have worked on their flexibility in Physical Education.

Our students have also had a great time this week in different classes thanks to the participation of our language assistant Craig. In 1st year of ESO they have talked about the properties of addition and multiplication through different activities, thus learning various technical terms in English. In 3rd year of ESO they have learned about the properties of electricity during the technology class, and in biology they have played a Pasapalabra about levels of organization: bioelements, biomolecules, cells, tissues, organs, systems and devices. 4th year of ESO have had fun through different football situations and 1st year of Baccalaureate have had fun in a strength circuit during their respective Physical Education lessons.

This week, the 1st ESO students have started practising yoga with the participation of our language assistant Ilia during the Physical Education class and they have learned in a participatory way about the landscape and the coast in Geography and History. The 2nd ESO students have learned vocabulary related to materials during the technology class. Finally, the 3rd ESO students have talked about the monumental heritage of Sanlúcar and other nearby cities in the Art class, and they have also learned more about the celebration of Halloween in the English class through different games.

Ilia and Craig go on collaborating with the students at school, encouraging the use of English and knowledge of their culture. Among other activities, it is worth mentioning the appearance and extension of Anglo-Saxon culture in geography and history, they have also learned safety signs in technology and have played several participatory games during the English class in which they have practised the language.
