According to the Brazilian Forum on Public Security, in 2020, after 14 years of the creation of the Maria da Penha law, the military police of several states still register cases of domestic violence under the nomenclature “disintelligence” (used to classify episodes they understand not police problems) and “husband and wife fights”. Many policemen do not give full support to the woman, and are not able to hear what she has to say, let the aggression pass by and take her as a "little problem".
Even underreported the data is alarming. The recorded occurrences reveal that 78 women were threatened, 50 physically assaulted and three raped per day, in two months of pandemic. This means that in Rio Grande do Sul, five women suffer some form of violence every hour.
Laudelina says that the first assault was an unpleasant surprise. “I didn't believe I was going through that”, she repeated several times indignantly. The violence came after the ex-husband discovered that the partner separated food items from the market purchase to deliver to her mother. “I always helped at home,” he says. In the middle of the discussion about the fact, he lifted her by the neck. Then apologies came, it wouldn't happen anymore. Occurred. Then came humiliation, kicking, cursing, other offenses and Laudelina's withdrawal from friends and other family members. The woman never denounced her ex-husband.
“I always thought that as I lied, taking food (to the mother), it was my punishment to be beaten”
Laudelina
"I always ended up blaming myself for something and believing that I deserved it there, because aggressive men put you in a situation that you are guilty of fighting, as if they were your mother punishing you for a mischief, laments Laudelina.
The break with the aggressor occurred when Laudelina's friend had to settle during the isolation at her home. The friend witnessed the abuses and advised Laudelina. Until one day, the ex-husband warned Laudelina that he no longer wanted her friend in the house due to the bad influence: the friend was taking Laudelina away from him. After an argument between the couple, the ex-husband recorded a video offending Laudelina's comadre and sent it to WhatsApp groups.
“Either I was still married, or I lost the only friend I had left. I lost my essence by idolizing a man who mistreated me for being handsome. I thought it was normal and did not see it when he told me that I was a black man. When I played aggressive games in front of people close to me, like: I'm going to break your stick. And I thought it was funny, until I started to notice that they were being repetitive ”, he reports.
Fortunately, Laudelina survived.
