Retest Policy

How do I retest for ELA?

Steps to retest:

1. Check your grade. Find out which Learning Target you want to retest for.

2. Find the Learning Target below.

3. Do the three practice assignments listed under the Learning Target. This helps you learn the skill and be prepared to retest.

4. Either fill out the Google form, or print out and turn in the Retest Checklist with any missing work so I know you are ready!

5.EL.01:Inference and Text Evidence

I can quote evidence from the text using quotation marks, paragraph/page numbers when applicable, and exact words when supporting an inference about the text or explaining what it says explicitly; identify the author’s purpose of a text and list one piece of evidence that supports my answer.

In order to retest, complete the following:

2. 5th Grade Language Arts IXL Code H3 (fifth grade)

3. Reread Google Slides: Text Inferences

4 Worksheet: Text Inference Worksheet (either print it out, write the answers in a separate Google doc or a separate sheet of paper and share it with me)


5.EL.02: Theme and Summary

I can identify one theme of a text and support it with three details from the text, including one detail on character development. I can summarize the text by listing key events and using complete sentences.

In order to retest, complete the following:

2. 5th Grade Language Arts IXL Code B1 to 90%.

3. Read through this list of common themes.

4. Complete this Theme and Setting Practice (either print it out, write the answers in a separate Google doc or a separate sheet of paper and share it with me).


5.EL.03: Main Idea and Summary

I can identify two or more main ideas of an informational text and summarize the text using one main idea, three supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

In order to retest, complete the following:

2. IXL Code 5th Grade Language Arts A.1 to 90%

3. Review vocabulary in yellow from Google Slides presentation.

4. Complete Main Idea Practice (4 questions) (either print out, or write answers on a sheet of paper or Google doc).


5.EL.04: Story Elements

I can draw on specific details to compare and contrast characters, setting, and plot in a text. I can describe how the point of view influences the way the story is told. I can compare and contrast the theme of multiple stories from the same genre.

In order to retest, complete the following:

1. Complete any missing work for this learning target.

2. IXL Code 5th Grade Language Arts I.1 to 90%

3. Review Story Elements Notes in Google Slides

4. Story Elements task cards 13-24 (write on notebook paper and turn in. See Ms. Lena for cards.)


5.EL.05: Text Structure

I can explain the relationship between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a text. I can compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts on the same topic.

In order to retest, complete the following:

3. Read Text Structure Notes

4. Complet1. e Text Structure Practice (5 questions)


5.EL.06: Figurative Language

I can identify and interpret similes, metaphors, idioms, adages, and proverbs in context.

In order to retest, complete the following:

1. 5th Grade Language Arts IXL Code F.1 to 90%

2. 5th Grade Language Arts IXL Code CC.2 to 90%

3. Figurative Language Task Cards 1-12 (write on notebook paper and turn in. See Ms. Lena for cards.)


5.EL.11: Creative Writing/Descriptive Language

I can write a narrative/creative three-paragraph text and use literary devices, transition words, and sensory details to describe the setting and develop characters. I can use the writing process to develop and strengthen my writing.

In order to retest, complete the following:

1. Complete any missing journal entries (find in Synergy).

2. Rewrite the journal entries handed back WITH revisions based on the teacher's comments. It will not count if you rewrite the exact same thing!
